Rispetta i personaggi.

Art by Gipi, one of the most brilliant Graphic Novelists in Italy, for: “La terra dei figli” [Land of the sons]. I want to spend some tome to translate the text, because it explains part of his creative philosophy.

The rules of “La terra dei figli”

Don’t use a narrator.

Don’t use color.

All pages have to have the same grid.

Don’t use more than a period of text (note: not sure it’s the right English, but he means less than a paragraph, a bit more than a sentence) in each balloon.

If a character makes a gesture, do a panel only for that gesture.

Keep in mind the timing of the dialogues, if there is a pause in the conversation, draw a mute/empty panel.

Do not explain anything.

Keep in mind, and draw it, the cycle of day & night.

Respect the burning Sun, respect the Rain.

Do not use balloon for a character thoughts. You’ll feel shame for as long as you live.

If a character is thinking, use a mute panel.

Do not use indications as “meanwhile” od “the day after”, it’s 2016, if you have to express time passing, you can find an effective solution to express it through drawings.

If you use a balloon for a long explanation, shoot yourself after.

Respect the character, don’t make them do or say anything they wouldn’t do or say.

No one will love you enough, so make the reading process as easy as possible.

When you’re tired, draw another page.
